I am terribly sorry I have forgot to update this bug with my current situation. Upon upgrading to the x64 version of Lucid Lynx (a few weeks ago), the problems seem to have all but disappeared.
Other notable differences: -while on my previous install I used wicd to manage my wireless connections, I now use the network-manager applet. -I used to have the wireless-backports package installed (as, without it, crashes seemed much more commonplace).
