I'm afraid that hasn't quite fixed the bug.

When hddtemp isn't running, adding the computertemp applet to the panel
causes something completely unusable to be added to the panel! I'm
seeing 1 black pixel appear on the panel (against the new transparent
background - nice!), or sometimes a vertical line of black pixels! it
doesn't appear to be selectable and I have to kill it via a terminal!
This is arguably worse than before. :oP

Once hddtemp is running, I am able to add computertemp. I am then able
to get to it's preferences and select that I want to use hwmon instead
of hddtemp. This is as it was before.

Having got computertemp started and using hwmon, I can then also stop
hddtemp without affecting computertemp. So computertemp is clearly
capable of running without hddtemp, even though having hddtemp running
is currently a requirement of running computertemp.

Let me know if you need any more testing doing - I'm happy to help.
