"sudo modprobe -r psmouse" completely disable the touchpad, I don't think that's what Adam wants.
Once you've applied the kernel patches (which are now part of the latest kernel, 2.6.34), it should be detected as a touchpad. Then, in gnome, mouse preferences, touchpad tab, you just have to select "disable touchpad while typing". It actually runs syndaemon.
