I'm the original reporter. I haven't had any recent problems, but I seldom open .doc and .docx files in OO anymore. Earlier this week, I tried to edit a .docx file and OO Writer couldn't open the file. It crashed every time I tried (3.2.0, Ubuntu build)). I think someone e-mailed me awhile back that OO doesn't like .docx files. I've learned a good work around: MS Word allows saving in .ODP format, so I do that before trying to use OO on the road. (I use Linux exclusively on my laptop and at home, but work requires me to use the Redmond Refuse when on the premises). Sorry I can't be more helpful, I'm just a user, not a geek!
