I have the same symptoms on my m1330. It began after installation of 10.04 (upgraded from 9.10). I experienced problems with my graphics driver, so I did a "sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia*" and then installed "nvidia-current". I think this might have something to do with the nvidia driver. I do not have a custom grub file, my startup is already in high resolution, so this shouldn't be the source of the bug.
