I tried the fix in comment #8 and the system (Lenovo W500 running Lucid) seemed to hang after the Ubuntu splash and before the login screen. Rebooting to low graphics mode and reinstalling the ATI proprietary driver fixed the hand and my window performance has improved dramatically.
