UPDATE: After waiting for a very long while (maybe half an hour) just with the "nomodeset" option instead of "splash", the monitor started to display weird things. Then, after a few minutes of showing weird stuff, finally the desktop came up and installation was possible.
After installation, the monitor is put to sleep again. I guess I need to set the "nomodeset" option permanently as explained here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=47558 However, I do not see the Grub menu anymore.
