Hi Forrest your workaround has survived two reboots - thanks a million!

David thanks for the initial hda solution jeez you're the only guys on
the web who figured this thing out.  I ran the alsa-info.sh script and
attached the output, if you're interested.

Of course I'm running a Dell Optiplex 380.
