The problem appears to be related to the user's authorization level. I
get the same error with my Canon A70 but not when I start Digikam as
/root!

Method:
Open a Konsole window and type "sudo digikam" (without the quotes). Agree to 
all the prompts, etc. and Digikam will operate as expected. 

Downloaded photos will, by default, be in the directory
/root/Pictures/...  Move them (as root) to where you want!
