I also have the same issue with Ubuntu 10.04 (gnome) on a Dell D600. The left touch-pad button seems to become stuck in a down position and it only responds after moving the cursor or pressing again (sometimes a few times). This is true for both the upper and lower mouse buttons (above and below the touch-pad). I have't noticed this issue with other older Linux distributions including Ubuntu 8.10 (which is still installed on this PC). My external USB mouse is also working OK.
