I think there's absolutely no need to further diagnose this issue. It has been diagnosed, acknowledged and fixed months ago by the upstream kernel developers. All you need to fix this issue for karmic kernel is to apply the very simple patch that I linked in the original posting. Links to RedHat bugzilla contain technical details of the issue.
