Update: For about 2.5 days now, my dvd drive has been working perfectly in Ubuntu/Kubuntu Lucid (both live cds and installs). It mounts automatically and burns every time now. It is possible that my external drive was interfering with the performance of my internal dvd drive and also my wireless internet connection. There have been no problems with either ever since I disconnected the external drive. This problem only occurred in Ubuntu/Kubuntu with the 2.6.32.* kernels though. Newer PPA kernals had no problems in *ubuntu, as well as PClinuxOS 2010 and Windows XP.
