I cleared the deck for a few months. Having a paid version of XP and all the
other files pays.
I downloaded the latest version of Gnome Ubuntu (have always had questions
with KDE). This newest version is fast and to this point error free.
Everything is where it should be and Amarok works now. I have worked closely
with computers and Linux since 2004. It pays not to question the mechanics
behind the magic if the thing works. Thanks for the reply anyway.
