Update on this.  I made numerous changes to OpenTripPlanner (the
instructions above check out the precise version exhibiting this bug),
and upgraded to Lucid, thus upgrading my JDK.

I have now run across another, similar crash.  You can check out the version of 
OTP that exhibits this crash with:
svn co https://svn.opentripplanner.org/branches/contraction-wip/ -r864
Follow the same instructions.

Here's the output right before it crashes:
