UPDATE:  I suspected the grub reinstall getting things to work was a
long shot in the first place and having it actually get me going was a
fluke, especially when it didn't work a second time.  Further
investigation revealed the problem was having to manually set the BIOS
to DDR3 1600 from the auto detected 1333 (which apparently is pretty
standard at the present state of affairs).  I corrected that setting and
booted up without further ado.  Will post if further problems arise.
