Just wanted to add a "me, too" for thumb drives (multiple brands / sizes), but
also to add that I have the same behaviour on a logitech usb microphone, as
well as a logitech usb webcam.
Both will show up if I do "lsusb" after hot-plugging.
The straight-up microphone will only work if I have it plugged in at power-up.
If I hot-plug the webcam, "cheese" will be able to find / use it, but
"camorama" (as well as any flash apps) won't recognize it unless I have it
plugged in at power-up.

FWIW:
Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid)
Gnome 2.30.0 (Ubuntu 2010-03-31)
Kernel 2.6.32-22-generic
Dell Inspiron B120
Celron-M 1.40 GHz
2 GB RAM
USB Controller = Intel 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family)
