I took a crack at backporting the patches from the upstream buglink. I cherrypicked the three patches I mentioned above, and reverted http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu- lucid.git;a=commit;h=5e1941884c700b7b97bcad52c2d8212ac56a7ebc (the workaround from 543617). The backports are attached: 2 of the cherrypicks were not clean and I'm not exactly an FS expert, but it works for me.
