Thanks for looking at this bug report.

It might be the case the kfmclient did only support konqueror in the
past (compare
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/en/man1/kfmclient.1.html to
the link I gave in my initial report). However, it does work for me with
Firefox: typing "kfmclient openURL http://www.google.com &" in the
console opens a new tab with google in Firefox for me. Note that I have
set Firefox as the program that handles http(s).

The reason I stumbled upon this issue was that KBibTeX uses kfmclient to
open on-line searches for bibliographic data. I did not have Konqueror
installed, and I got a message that kfmclient was missing, so I started
looking around and found that it was in the konqueror package, which I
installed, after which the on-line search worked (opens tabs in
Firefox).
