This problem was completely solved for me by this post: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gwibber/+bug/552227 Look at #70.
This explains why people were getting relief by switching to openDNS or by just waiting until later. The timeouts for the Gwibber services are so small, that the slight speed edge you get with a better dns lookup makes it work.
