In addition to the above, I tried using the wireless interface instead of the b44 wired interface. Exactly the same happens to the wireless card. I.e. Playing the media stream works fine, but selecting the program guide causes the network interface to fail. So, I would conclude that it is a more general fault, and not confined to the b44 card.
