I also have this issue when writing to a 4Gb USB stick. Transfer rates start high, then slow to a crawl or even stall completely. As they slow down, the whole computer becomes unresponsive for seconds at a time. On the same machine, the same USB stick is working fine under Windows XP; read access is also no problem.
