The development release referenced above fixes the problem reported. Commenting out the /etc/X11/default-display-manager causes a command line login to occur and removing the comment in /etc/X11/default- display-manager re-establishes the gui login screen and an OS is found on reboot.
The upstream kernel also fixes the problem. This was tested with only the upstream kernel.
