I have a similar problem in the final edition of 10.04 on a thinkpad t42 system. Not sure about processor use, but it throws floppy IO errors (no floppy drive ever present). The system is *very* unstable. I've been using past Ubuntus on this lap since 8.04 or so, and had no problems whatsoever. I'll try to post more info.
