An update from me; Unfortunately the above 'fix' does not work on my machine.
I have not the time to test this in a different install order at the moment, but what I did was this; 1. install proprietary drivers (which I use in karmic) for ATI result: whereas notifications kind of popped up when hitting the brightness key combination with the open drivers (but didn't work correctly) now, with the proprietary drivers, nothing happens at all. 2. modify grub file, update grub, reboot result: no change.
