I got my e1550 modem to work by installing the package "usb-modeswitch".
If I plug the modem to the computer while usb-modesiwtch is installed it
automatically works and I can use the wizard provided by the network-
manager applet. It did, however, not ask me for the pin code and to get
the modem to work I was needed to manually provide it in the network-
manager settings, accessible thru the applet.

I hope that this will help you guys and I also hopes that usb_modeswitch
will be included in the next cd-image release (ie. a dependency of
ubuntu-desktop), it would only require ~45kB. If not include in the
standard release it should at least be included in the netbook edition.
