To verify that this is not a ubuntu one specific issue I have uploaded a .bashrc to 3 random free file hosting sites.

When downloading these same files with Opera, the file is saved correctly as ".bashrc" The symptoms do not change if I change the directory where the file is saved In both firefox & chromium the "save as" dialogue shows ".bashrc" but the file is actually saved as "bashrc".
