You can adjust the font size of the Details pull-down in the Synaptic Package Manager. In there, go to Settings => Preferences => Columns and Fonts => Use custom terminal font. I will not close the bug, because 1. The default font should be small enough to make the window fit, and 2. You should be able to alter these settings from within Update Manager, possibly by pointing to the same settings as Synaptic.
