i have exactly the same problem - randomsound prevents pulseaudio from
detecting the sound device. Here is what happens:
% sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: root 2010 F.... arecord
arny 2591 F.... audacious
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: root 2010 F...m arecord
/dev/snd/seq: timidity 2810 F.... timidity
/dev/snd/timer: root 2010 f.... arecord
% sudo apt-get remove randomsound
...
% sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: arny 2402 F.... pulseaudio
arny 2591 F.... audacious
/dev/snd/seq: timidity 2810 F.... timidity
(arecord is used by randomsound)
