There are plently of dashboards which can overlay IP, up/down link sppeds, memory/processor usage, current song, date etc.
Banshee shows NotifyOSD notifications when new song starts playing with song & artist. And I personally have gnome-system-monitor mapped to a shortcut to get information about the system.
