Exactly, the open drivers provide a proper resoulution framebuffer to the kernel that is used for the splash (using kernel mode setting I think), as the proprietary nvidia drivers are unable to do so vga16fb is used instead to provide the framebuffer, but that gives a 640x480 16 colors screen by default.
