Jeremy,
this problem is only present on jaunty kernel, with lucid everything works up 
to 1000Mbit. But i have a lot of computers running jaunty here and i can't make 
a migration to lucid now.

So i'm going to use my custom-kernel but i don't like this idea due to
security updates.

Here is a patch (from e1000 version 1.0.15 sources) you can apply to
last jaunty security kernel source.

** Patch added: "diff from official ubuntu 2.6.28 kernel (latest security 
update) and mine with 1.0.15 driver from e1000 to have full gigabit support"
