I launched synaptic and selected the following packages for reinstall: xorg xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg
synaptic reinstalled these packages without any problem, so I tried to collect the report once again. apport-collect 574152 j...@daywalker:~$ apport-collect 574152 Package xorg-server not installed and no hook available, ignoring The system still says its not installed, although obviously it is because I'm in the gnome desktop environment and it's running on top of X.
