This same issue seems to be popping up in Lucid 10.04. When the trackpad is used in addition to the external USB mouse, then both mice often stop working, and the keyboard also goes caput.
System: HP Pavilion dv5-1125nr OS: Ubuntu Lucid 64-bit, fresh-installed upgrade from Karmic (I had broken my X) Prevalence: significant, has happened several times in 24 hours.
