sorry .. the problem still remains .. so forget my previous posts :( It seems a problem of memory: if I switch without any app opened everything go right, but if just open some firefox wins and a openoffice document and then try to switch get the blank screen ..
I tried to use the User Switcher panel applet, instead of the Indicator Applet Session as suggested here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/546578 and that seems to work with all desktop effects turned off.
