Thanks yeti. The sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off seem to stop the kern.log spamming. I wasn't shure how to do this automatically at startup, but following this: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-wireless-networking-41/where-should-i-add-iwconfig-options-to-make-them-permanent-786904/ worked for me.
