Wow, and I had such high hopes for my first upgrade (Karmic->Lucid)! It seems the Ubuntu developers are not really interested in fixing this problem, or the many other open bugs. The workaround obviously appears to uninstall virtualbox before upgrading, yet nobody seemed to mention it on the Lucid upgrade site...
