Don't worry about it, it's just a case of trying things out and the more information the better.
Does using the direct connect option require any sort of fiddling or tweaking to make it work, or are you now in a similar position to Gnome whereby it works as you log in? This will help with setting the bug importance. Is it necessary for you to use a proxy? Are the proxy settings within the KNetworkManager program? As far as I can see, this is still a bug regardless of what's causing it. If it works without a problem in Ubuntu, and not in Kubuntu, something's wrong. They should be in the same position and it clearly cannot be a driver issue. Using working internet if possible, whilst in KDE, could you please run: apport-collect 571154 This should send Launchpad enough system information related to the package that is causing the issue for someone to take a look at what's causing this.
