Basically followed mox69 directions to correct problem. From the command line, first issued the command 'sudo apt-get install dpkg --reinstall -y' followed by 'sudo aptitude full-upgrade'
Afterward, wine was a problem, so used Synaptic to remove wine and install wine1.2 Now there is other upgrading required, and at least a relatively stable system w/ GUI.
