Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Sound was working fine on Lucid until today. Today, I booted and I
noticed that rhythmbox produced no sound. When I mouse over music files
I have no sound either (I was expecting the usual preview of the music).

When I open the same files in MPlayer, they are correctly played. I have
a normal login sound. But when I use the command "aplay" to play a music
file, everything comes out completely distorted, like a detuned radio.

I don't remember installing anything just before this stopped working. I
had installed and uninstalled sox and I installed and kept snd. But I
still had things working after this, even after shutting down and
booting a few times.
