You are right electhor, thank you for the tip.
I installed 2.6.34-999-generic #201005011008 SMP and the Huawei E620 USB Modem 
is working for hours now without problem. I removed it and switched it back in 
a number of times and every time it did connect properly.
I am not sure why uname -a mentions i686 because I downloaded headers and image 
named _i386 but that's another story.
This was on my test machine, not sure I want to upgrade my production machine 
at this time, as it is mentioned somewhere "use it at your own risk" which I 
dislike for a production machine.
