I had the same issue with a live CD boot of Lucid-RC (kubuntu/x86) on a
ThinkPad T30 (type 2366-JBU). With network-manager running, the ESSID
is garbled. When I use "service stop network-manager" and then manually
configure the ESSID, it shows up properly.

The card is an IBM branded Prism 2.5 MiniPCI (OE with this model) and
the firmware revs are 1.1.0 for the primary and 1.8.2 for the secondary.

I'm going to download the released version and retry.
