I've had this problem for ages (3+ years) with Thunderbird.  I'm now in
triage mode as I've just installed Lucid and I've been tracking down
lots of little annoyances.

For the record, Thunderbird 3 has the same issue.  I'll point out that
it's not *just* the little progress bar, but /any/ progress bar that
Thunderbird presents.
