The Open Office quickstart tool is clearly having an impact. Following on from the above post when I shutdown this afternoon, initially it did the total lack of action I am coming to expect. I then did a clean exit of the OO quickstart tool and then shutdown worked!
So something, within OpenOffice and probably the quickstart tool, is interfering with the normal shutdown processing on lucid.
