I can add the logs but I can also tell you what happened.

Turns out in /var/lib/dpkg/info/apt.postinst there is a function called:

set_apt_proxy_from_gconf

What’s more is down a ways in the script it calls this line and that is
what makes it fail. I'm going to hazard a guess that since this is
Kubuntu there is not enough stuff there for gconf to work. I don't use a
proxy so I commented out the call and the surrounding if (3 lines) and
then dpkg was able to configure everything and all was well. Well, then
I have the usual hassle with Nvidia and VirtualBox, but that's another
issue ;-)
