Just in case anybody doesn't know how to fix this: System -> Appearance -> Customise -> Selected Items (Text). Set it to something like "#684E44" in "Colour name". To make this more permanent (until the package is updated), change /usr/share/themes/Homosapien/gtk-2.0/gtkrc: change "selected_fg_color:#FFF" to "selected_fg_color:#684E44".
