This fix worked for me. From a vanilla install. Instead of 12 seconds of
blinking black cursor before plymouth I now have a smooth boot
experience.

gksu gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
and add this option FRAMEBUFFER=y, save the file, then
sudo update-initramfs -u
