Hello Chris, Chris Cheney [2010-04-27 21:20 -0000]: > XKBMODEL="SKIP" > XKBLAYOUT="us" > XKBVARIANT="U.S. English"
Hm, this is also an invalid variant. Now that you mention it, a lot of other reporters also has this, so I suppose it's again a bug in the vmware setup script. However, comment 8 has an empty variant. So my current working theory is that it previously choked on both an invalid model and an invalid variant, and now the invalid model doesn't hurt any more. I tested your configuration and can perfectly reproduce the problem with XKBVARIANT="U.S. English". Does it start to work for you too if you set XKBVARIANT to ""? Also, does it work with the lucid final X server for you, too? We might consider adding a workaround for this "U.S. English" variant and ignore it, but at this point it really gets messy. For now I suggest that everyone who is affected fixes /etc/default/console-setup to replace the broken XKBVARIANT="U.S. English" with XKBVARIANT="".
