After rebooting several times and reproducing the situation, where I don't get sound until I run "alsa force-reload", I rebooted one more time, and this time when I ran "alsa force-reload" I did not get my audio back. I also don't see the hardware listed under the sound properties. So apparently even though this works some of the time, it doesn't work ALL of the time. I can run "alsa force-reload" again and again, and it doesn't give me back my sound, like it did on previous boots. This is very inconsistent.
