The openvas-nvt-sync script is broken. You can manually download the .nas rules from http://www.openvas.org /openvas-nvt-feed-current.tar.bz2 Be warned, that tar ball is not packaged well and will extract hundreds of files into your current directory. Many of the files are no used on LInux (I don't think). I copied only the *.nas rules to /var/lib/openvas/pluigins.
