I've been working with bp on this server.

The problem was never fixed. However, in the meantime I've given up on
VMware and their inability to create a usable VMware Server version for
Linux. :( (All KVM right now, which works just fine.) The VM is also no
longer in use. So it's not a problem for me anymore.

If anyone else is having this issue, Dave had the right idea with the
keyword 'drift'. That, together with 'VMware' and 'clock' yields a lot
of sources. It mostly seems like a VMware problem. I tried one fix
unsuccessfully, of which I can't remember the details, sorry.

I'm fine with closing this bug. Sorry not to be of more help.
